HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 c529W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Brent, South (Mr. Pavitt) on 1 March, Official Report, column 330, what is his estimate of disproportionate cost.

Mr. Waldegrave

I have nothing to add to the answer that I gave in reply to a question from the hon. Member on 6 March at column527.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will seek to set up a Royal Commission to draw up proposals for the reorganisation of local government in England.

Mr. Waldegrave

No.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list those London boroughs which have indicated in their responses to Cmnd. 9063 that savings will be made as a result of abolition of the Greater London council; and what these savings were.

Mr. Waldegrave

Four London boroughs—Croydon, Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and Wandsworth—referred specifically in their formal response to the savings they expected to arise from abolition. Their estimates indicated that abolition of the GLC in 1983–84 could have saved more than £200 milion. The majority of boroughs made no specific comments on the expected extent of savings.
