HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 c495W
19. Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he is satisfied with the operation of diplomatic immunity in the United Kingdom and for British diplomats and their dependants abroad.

Mr. Whitney

Rules regarding diplomatic immunity seek to ensure that the duly notified representatives of sovereign states may carry out their duties abroad free from improper interference. At the same time diplomats are legally bound to respect local laws and regulations. This balance of rights and obligations is to a very large extent understood and adhered to both in this country and overseas. We take up every breach affecting British interests with the authorities concerned.
