HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 c480W
Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish in the Official Report the date of the commencement of the Home Office campaign to promote the safe use of air weapons and the date of its conclusion.

Mr. Brittan

The formal campaign began on 8 November and ended on 24 December 1983, but the leaflet and television filler films produced for the campaign will continue to be available.

Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent television announcements or advertisements have been used in the campaign to promote the safe use of air weapons.

Mr. Brittan

Two television filler films were produced for the campaign and were distributed to all ITV stations, BBC TV and TV-am. They were shown on a total of 69 occasions between the beginning of the campaign and 31 March this year. It was always the intention that the films should continue to be shown after the formal campaign had ended.

Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent national newspaper publicity featured in the campaign to promote the safe use of air weapons.

Mr. Brittan

A package of material, including copies of the press release and the campaign leaflet and poster, was sent to all national and local newspapers. The emphasis of the campaign was on local activity and newspaper coverage was much greater locally than nationally.
