HC Deb 13 April 1984 vol 58 c428W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many calves in Wales will have to be slaughtered to meet the conditions of European Economic Community milk directives; and what proportion of Welsh cattle this represents.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The measures agreed by the Council of Agriculture Ministers on 30–31 March give all milk producers a guaranteed quantity for which Community price support arrangements will apply. Production in excess of the guaranteed quantity will be levied. It will be for individual producers to decide how to adjust their production in the new circumstances, whether by culling cows, reducing yields or altering their present farming systems.

Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how much revenue he expects Welsh farmers to lose as a result of the European Economic Community milk directives; and whether he expects farmers in Wales to lay off any farm workers as a result.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The effect of the milk directives on individual producers will depend upon the steps they take to adapt their present production systems to take account of the new measures.
