HC Deb 12 April 1984 vol 58 cc373-4W
Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many civil servants at any convenient date in the past five years were employed in his Department on matters connected with health.

Mr. John Patten

In addition to staff engaged on general health and social service matters the Department employs a number of civil servants on the provision of direct care (in such units as special hospitals, artificial limb and appliance centres, the artificial eye unit and youth treatment centres). The numbers of permanent civil servants in these categories were as follows:

General Direct Care Total
1 January 1980 5,642 3,587 9,229
1 January 1981 5,422 3,869 9,291
1 January 1982 5,291 3,994 9,285
1 January 1983 5,121 4,057 9,178
1 January 1984 4,874 4,135 9,009

These figures do not include staff supplying common services to the Department as a whole.
