HL Deb 12 April 1984 vol 450 c1316WA
Lord Melchett

asked Her Majesty' Government:

Whether they maintain records of imports and exports of specimens of flora and fauna listed in Appendices I and II of the Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, for trade between the United Kingdom and other members of the European Communites.

Lord Skelmersdale

EC Regulation 3626/82, which came into effect on 1st January 1984, requires the United Kingdom and other Members of the European Community to maintain records of imports and exports of CITES specimens traded with states which are not Members of the Community. Under EC Regulations 3626/82 and 3418/83, records are not required of imports and exports within the Community However, it is the practice within the United Kingdom to ask for permits or certificates of permission to be shown for all CITES specimens entering or leaving the country, and checks are made to ensure that the convention and the EC regulations are observed.
