HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 cc167-8W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment under what powers he gave planning consent, or deemed planning consent to have been given, for the construction of a new building between the Norman Shaw north and Norman Shaw south buildings: who put forward the proposal; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

The temporary building houses a unit of the Metropolitan police which requires accommodation in this area for operational reasons. Their previous accommodation had to be demolished to make way for the Richmond yard scheme now under construction. With the approval of the Services Committee, the site was made available by my Department. The Metropolitan police then obtained planning permission from Westminster city counil and supervised the construction. The Building will be removed in 1985 when the unit moves to permanent accommodation nearby.
