HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c167W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to the reply to the hon. Member for Norfolk, North of 15 March, Official Report, column 251, why the £1,390 million spent on housing cannot be attributed to the public or private sector; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

The £1,390 million estimated to be spent on housing which could not be fully attributed to either those in public sector housing or the private sector was mainly expenditure on new housebuilding for rent in the public sector (£1,076 million). The remainder was, broadly, expenditure on low-cost home ownership shemes (£211 million); slum clearance (£45 million) and the acquisition of land and dwellings by local authorities and new towns (£58 million).
