HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c191W
Mr. Robert C. Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to initiate a United Nations Security Council resolution to try to resolve the deteriorating situation in the Lebanon following the breakdown of the Lausanne conference and the failure of the Syrians to impose their protectorate over Lebanon.

Mr. Luce

We regret the lack of progress at the Lausanne reconciliation talks and hope that the further efforts now being made to reach a settlement will prove successful. A lasting settlement can only be made on the basis of agreement among the Lebanese, and cannot be imposed by the United Nations Security Council. But we continue to work for wider involvement of the United Nations in peacekeeping duties in Lebanon.
