asked the Secretary of State for Defence what significant changes there have been in the food served to Her Majesty's forces over the past 20 years; and if he will make a statement.

Stemming from improvements in the professional management of the service catering branches and the introduction of modern facilities there have been considerable improvements in the choice and presentation of food. Messing content and policy is constantly monitored and changed to reflect trends in general civilian eating habits.

As announced yesterday by my noble Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces we have agreed to a request from the Egon Ronay organisation to conduct a survey of catering in the services.
