HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c178W
Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland on how many occasions, since June 1981, police forces in Scotland have used their powers of forcible detention under the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act; if he will give figures up to the end of December 1983; and if he will break down the figures by region.

Mr. Ancram

The number of detentions under section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1980 for the period June 1981 to March 1983 was given in a reply to the hon. Member for Edinburgh, South (Mr. Ancram) on 5 May 1983 at column 128. The number of detentions in the period April to December 1983 is as follows:

Dumfries and Galloway 623
Fife 1,619

SCOTLAND 17,885

Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many detentions in Scotland have been carried out by police forces in addition to forcible detentions, during the period June 1981 to end December 1983; and if he will break down the figures by region.

Mr. Ancram

Apart from their power under section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1980, police in Scotland may detain suspects under prevention of terrorism legislation. Statistics on the latter are published regularly in the series of Home Office statistical bulletins. No other powers of detention are available to the police in Scotland.
