asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the membership of the working party which is to review the services provided by artificial limb and appliance centres; and if he will make a statement.

As I announced in reply to my hon. Friend's earlier questions on 25 November 1983 at column348 and 16 January 1984 at column 127–28, the working party's terms of reference will be: To review and report on the adequacy, quality and management of the various services received by patients in artificial limb and appliance centres in England, and on the respective roles of the staff of the centres, the NHS and manufacturers, having regard to the need to promote efficiency and cost effectiveness.

It will be chaired by Professor Ian McColl, professor of surgery at the United Medical Schools of Guy's and St. Thomas' hospitals, and director of the surgical unit at Guy's hospital, he is also consultant surgeon to Lewisham hospital and to Edenbridge District Memorial Hospital, and honorary consultant in surgery to the Army.

The other members of the working party will be as follows:

Sir Austin Bunch Kt CBE

National President of the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association. He recently retired as Chairman of the Electricity Council.

Miss Elizabeth Fenshawe DipCOT

Director of the Disabled Living Foundation.

Professor Brian Griffiths

Dean of the City University Business School and Professor of Banking and International Finance there. He is also on the Bank of England's panel of consultants.

Mr. M. J. Hussey

Director of, and special consultant to, Times Newspapers Ltd.

Mr. Peter Janes

Manufacturing director of Gillette UK Ltd.

Dr. C. B. Wynn-Parry MBE, DM, FRCP, FRCS

Director of rehabilitation at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

The Working Party will be assisted by a number of assessors, who will include Dr. Alan English, principal medical officer for the ALAC services and Miss C. Van de Ven who is superintendent physiotherapist, at Roehampton. It will start work as soon as possible, and I understand that Professor McColl intends to invite views from organisations, companies and individuals with an interest in the services of artificial limb and appliance centres.
