HC Deb 06 April 1984 vol 57 cc671-2W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Prime Minister if she will establish a Registrar General for Wales; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

No. The law governing marriages and registration of births and deaths is uniform throughout England and Wales. Fresh legislation would be needed to establish a separate office of Registrar General for Wales and a separately administered local registration service. This would not be justified on legal, administrative or economic grounds, nor can it be foreseen that it would offer any practical advantage to the public in Wales.
