Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Prime Minister what is the overall total for the United Kingdom of (a) all rates paid to all local authorities, (b) all water and sewerage rates paid, (c) all money paid by central Government to all local authorities and (d) all moneys received from all sources by local authorities and water authorities for 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

The information relating to local authorities is published in tables 4.1 and 4.2 of "Financial Statistics" (HMSO). The rent receipts shown in table 4.1 include central Government subsidies to local authority housing as follows (in £ million):
