HC Deb 06 April 1984 vol 57 cc667-8W
Mr. Rost

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will provide a schedule of the various funding schemes sponsored by his Department which offer support for investment related to energy conservation, energy research and development and energy demonstration projects in industry; if he will specify the criteria for qualification; and what publicity he is giving to prospective applicants to assist take-up.

Mr. Trippier

The industrial heat recovery consultancy scheme is the only specific scheme sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry whose objective is either to encourage energy conservation or energy research and development, or to support energy demonstration projects in industry. All other specific energy schemes for industry are handled by the Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency Office.

However, Department of Trade and Industry funds are available under the Science and Technology Act 1965 and the Industrial Development Act 1982 to support certain investment and research and development provided there are United Kingdom benefits which would not otherwise be obtained. These benefits may include improved energy efficiency.

The qualifying criteria for aid under the Science and Technology Act 1965 and the Industrial Development Act 1982 (including notes on the support for innovation and industrial heat recovery consultancy schemes) are set out in the guide to industrial support—an annex to British Business of 20 January 1984—a copy of which is in the Library. The guide, along with other publicity material on grant schemes, is widely disseminated throughout the United Kingdom and abroad using the Department's many contacts with industry and trade associations.
