HC Deb 06 April 1984 vol 57 cc702-3W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British students over the past 10 years have studied in Soviet Union universities and colleges; in which parts of the Soviet Union; and how many of them have stayed on in the Soviet Union after completing their studies.

Mr. Whitney

According to the best figures available some 572 British students have studied in Soviet colleges and universities under the Anglo-Soviet cultural agreement since 1972. Apart from a small minority who went to Kiev and Minsk, the students were all placed in Moscow, Leningrad or Voronezh. It is not possible to state how many have stayed on in the Soviet Union after completing their studies, but it is understood that very few will have done so.
