asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, using the same assumptions for 1984–85 for earnings he

tax on building alterations was calculated, and indicate what proportion of this estimate relates to alterations outside the housing sector.

Mr. Hayhoe

The calculations are based largely on estimates of consumers' expenditure on alterations. As far as practicable the key assumptions and calculations follow those described in an article inEconomic Trends, March 1980. There is a copy in the Library of the House. About 5–10 per cent. of the estimate relates to alterations outside the housing sector.
