HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 c587W
Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what future role he envisages for the Royal Air Force base at Gibraltar; and if it is his intention to retain the base at least at its present level of preparedness.

Mr. Stanley

Gibraltar has a key role to play in defending the straits which are vital for the supply and reinforcement of NATO's southern flank. The specific operational role of the RAF airfield at Gibraltar and its preparedness are kept under constant review to meet defence requirements.

Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if the Jaguar aircraft operating out of the Royal Air Force base, Gibraltar, will be kept there for the foreseeable future, or be replaced by other suitable aircraft.

Mr. Stanley

I regret that I cannot comment on our operational plans for RAF aircraft.
