Sir George Young

My Department's Property Services Agency is responsible for the Civil Estate comprising 12 million square metres, which provides accommodation needed by Government Departments to enable them to carry out their functions.

On 31 December 1983 the following accommodation on the Civil Estate was vacant:

Square Metres
Total Vacant Proportion which is surplus to requirements
Office 334,833 54,782
Storage 221,913 98,937
Specialised 210,033 35,395

Surplus property, representing 1.6 per cent. of the accommodation on the Civil Estate, is being disposed of as quickly as possible.
