§ Mr. Rostasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what assistance he is providing to encourage local authorities to convert refuse into useful energy.
§ Mr. WaldegraveMy Department has given substantial financial and technical assistance to local authorities in the development of the large scale experimental plants at Newcastle and Doncaster for deriving fuel from waste; we shall be publishing detailed reports on these later this year. We shall shortly be publishing a more general guide to mechanical waste sorting and the use of waste as a fuel in the light of experience of the plants. In addition, we have arranged with the Institute of Wastes Management and the Warren Spring laboratory a seminar in October on waste processing and resource recovery.
