asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many (a) improvement and (b) repair grants were made in Wales in the financial year 1982–83; what estimates he has for the same grants during the current financial year; and if he will make a statement.

Provisional figures provided by local authorities show that 5,285 improvement grants and 6,293 repair grants were paid in 1982–83. It is estimated that the corresponding figures for this financial year will be about 8,500 and 15,000 respectively.

These very large increases amply demonstrate the real boost which the 1982 Budget measure has given to home renovations.
