HC Deb 24 November 1983 vol 49 c292W
35. Mr. Jackson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much private sector investment has recovered since the first half of 1981.

Mr. Peter Rees

Private sector investment increased by 11.5 per cent. to 1980 prices, on a seasonally adjusted basis, between the first half of 1981 and the first half of 1983. Excluding net purchases of land and existing buildings, particularly council houses, private sector investment rose by around 6 per cent. over the same period. Provisional estimates show that investment in the manufacturing, construction, distribution and financial sectors increased further in real terms in the third quarter of this year. The CBI is forecasting a 5 per cent. real increase in manufacturing investment between the first half of 1983 and the first half of 1984 and a similar rate of increase in the second half of 1984.
