HC Deb 24 November 1983 vol 49 c290W
25. Mr. Greenway

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give details of the growth in the ecomomy in the first 10 months of 1983; and how this compared with the same period in 1982.

Mr. Lawson

On the average measure, GDP grew by 2.75 per cent. between the first halves of 1982 and 1983.

Mr. Strang

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the level of growth of the British economy over the next five years.

Mr. Lawson

Next year, like this year, I expect growth of up to 3 per cent. Thereafter, continuing good performance will depend on maintaining firm control of Government spending and borrowing to enable us to bring down interest rates, taxes, and inflation.
