HC Deb 24 November 1983 vol 49 cc312-3W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he has any plans, in the light of recent developments, to use his powers under the Northern Ireland Act 1982 to suspend the Assembly; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prior

No.

Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the prospects for the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Mr. Prior

I remain of the view that the Northern Ireland Assembly provides the best framework for reaching agreement in Northern Ireland. I regret the decision of the Ulster Unionist party to suspend its participation in the Assembly and I hope that on reflection the UUP will reconsider its position and that all constitutional parties will participate in the Assembly in the interests of the people of Northern Ireland.
