Mr. Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what plans he has to encourage continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis facilities in more general hospitals;

(2) if he will list the hospitals containing renal units and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis facilities, respectively.

We are advised that continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis—CAPD—is best undertaken under the supervision of a consultant nephrologist based in a renal unit where other forms of treatment are available, as CAPD may suddenly become unusable. Hospitals with renal units are as follows. Most of them provide CAPD and it is only rarely provided in any other hospital:

Northern Region:

  • Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle

  • North Ormesby Hospital, Middlesbrough
  • Royal Infirmary, Sunderland

Yorkshire Region:

  • General Infirmary, Leeds

North West Thames Region:

  • St. Mary's Hospital
