§ Mr. Roweasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the cost to the Exchequer of abolishing the savings rule applicable to claimants of social security benefits.
§ Dr. BoysonSupplementary benefit is the only social security benefit with a savings rule as such. The capital cut-off limit was increased to £3,000 from 21 November. Sufficient data are not available to enable a precise calculation to be made of the cost of abolishing the capital cut-off rule; but it is estimated that the cost would be considerably in excess of £100 million a year.
