HC Deb 04 November 1983 vol 47 c470W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied with the levels of police on foot patrol; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hurd

Deployment is primarily a matter for chief officers and I know they share our view on the importance of foot patrols. The improvement in the operational strength of the police service in England and Wales, through recruitment of new officers and redeployment of existing manpower, has enabled chief officers to put many more officers on the beat.
