HC Deb 04 November 1983 vol 47 cc474-5W
Mr. Hume

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will give full details of the computer system installed for use by the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Scott

The Royal Ulster Constabulary has two computer systems to assist with its operational responsibilities.

  1. (a) The computer assisted policing system is used to record details of all incidents reported to the police in the Greater Belfast area and for the deployment and control of resources allocated to these incidents. It also provides management information to ensure that the most efficient use is made of police resources; and
  2. (b) The crime information retrieval system contains details of vehicles licensed in Northern Ireland and all stolen or suspect cars. It also contains indexes relating to persons convicted of criminal offences in Northern Ireland and of wanted and missing persons. The full records of criminal offences are currently being transferred to the system.

A small additional computer is presently being installed to record details of firearms used in terrorist incidents.
