Mr. Maude

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what percentage of the total council housing stock in England has been sold to sitting tenants (a) in the last financial year and (b) since 1970.

Sales to sitting tenants by English local authorities and new towns in 1982–83 were an estimated 3.7 per cent. of the housing stock at 31 December 1982. Cumulative sales from January 1970 to March 1983 amounted to about 12½ per cent. of the December 1982 stock.
