Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when he expects to receive British Rail's inter-city strategy.

The Railways Board provided a progress report on the strategy study in September. I understand that it hopes to complete the study early in the new year.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport, pusuant to the reply to the hon. Member for Wrexham on 31 October, Official Report, c. 255, if, in the interests of good customer services, he will refuse to agree to any passenger line closure.

Any proposals by the Railways Board to close individual passenger lines or stations which come to my right hon. Friend for his decision will be considered on their merits.
