HC Deb 12 May 1983 vol 42 c476W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many unfilled vacancies were notified to his offices in the Walthamstow-Leyton area in June 1979 and in March 1983, respectively; and in each case what proportions were in manufacturing and in service industries, respectively.

Mr. Alison

The industrial analysis of unfilled vacancies is made quarterly for February, May, August and November. At May 1979, the number of notified vacancies remaining unfilled in the Walthamstow-Leyton area was 1,492, of which 46.3 per cent. were for manufacturing and 49.5 per cent. were for service industries. The corresponding number at February 1983 was 181, of which 29.3 per cent. were for manufacturing and 58.6 per cent. were for service industries. The figures do not include vacancies notified to careers offices. Vacancies notified to jobcentres are estimated to be about one third of all vacancies in the economy as a whole. The numbers of vacancies notified during the course of each month were 1,250 in May 1979 and 562 in February 1983.
