HC Deb 12 May 1983 vol 42 cc476-7W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people aged (a) 19 years or younger, (b) 20 to 25 years, (c) 26 to 44 and (d) 45 to 65 years were unemployed in May 1979 and in May 1983, or at the most recent available date, in the Crewe travel-to-work area; and what percentage of each age group this represented.

Mr. Alison

The following table gives, for the age groups nearest to those specified, the numbers for registered unemployed at April 1979—not available for May — and the numbers for unemployed claimants at January 1983, the latest available. Percentage rates of unemployment by age are not calculated for local areas.

Crewe travel-to-work area
Age April 1979 January 1983
19 and under 365 1,135
20 to 24 374 1,335
25 to 44 726 2,254
45 to 64 701 1,967

Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many (a) skilled manual workers, (b) unskilled manual workers and (c) manual workers were unemployed in May 1979 and at the latest date in the United Kingdom and in the Crewe travel-to-work area; and, in each case, what percentage of the total trained for such work these figures represented.

Mr. Alison

Figures available for the United Kingdom relate to unemployed people registered at jobcentres for employment in the groups shown as follows; September 1982 was the last date on which the analysis was made. Corresponding figures for the Crewe travel-to-work area are not readily available. Figures are not available for people trained for the particular groups, which would be needed for the required percentages.

June 1979 September 1982
Craft and similar occupations 123,800 415,400
General labourers 429,000 863,200
Other manual occupations 274,500 766,000
