HC Deb 12 May 1983 vol 42 cc503-4W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was spent on joint finance in each year since its inception, in pound sterling and as a percentage of the Government allocation for joint finance.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The information is as follows:

Year Total Spent (£ million) Percentage Cumulative Take-up
1976–77 4.2 52
1977–78 17.5 75
1978–79 31.1 83
1979–80 39.8 88
1980–81 60.1 92
1981–82 72.8 94
1982–83 *88.7 *96
* (estimated)

Any unspent money is carried forward to the following year.

Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to his remarks in Standing Committee B of 1 March 1983, Official Report, c. 124, what proportion of joint finance money is currently being used for recycling of projects existing prior to the allocation of joint finance money.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This information is not readily available. We are taking steps to improve the recording of joint finance schemes and the information on joint finance expenditure available to the Department. I do not regard the so-called recycling of projects as the best use of joint finance funds and joint consultative committees should devote the increased resources being made available to support new projects caring for people in or near their own homes who might otherwise be long-stay residents in hospitals.
