HC Deb 09 May 1983 vol 42 cc196-7W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether, in view of the high increase in casualties to pedal cyclists and moped users between 1981 and 1982, the Government will improve provision for these forms of transport.

Mrs. Chalker

The Government are already encouraging the provision of improved facilities for cyclists through technical advice and financial support. Whether such facilities should be made available for mopeds depends on local circumstances.

Effective training can make an important contribution to the safety of both cyclists and moped riders. Cycle training for school children taked place through the RoSPA national cycling proficiency scheme. Moped training courses are widely available and we are looking afresh at ways in which 16 year old moped riders might be provided with a stronger incentive to take training.
