§ The Prime MinisterI was making the general point that the CBI realise that the pattern of employment has always been changing, and that it does not make sense to subsidise employment in old and unprofitable industries making products which people do not buy. Lasting employment cannot be created by subsidy. It can be created only by new firms successfully exploiting new markets or by existing firms improving their competitiveness and maintaining their profitability.
