HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 c84W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which states other than the United Kingdom currently recognise the legality of the Jordanian annexation of the West Bank in 1952.

Mr. Hurd

That is for those concerned to say. But as far as we know, no United Nations member state raised objection to the entry of Jordan into the United Nations as a state on both banks of the Jordan in 1955, or has since raised objection.

Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government as to the lawful sovereignty over the West Bank.

Mr. Hurd

We believe that Israel should put an end to the territorial occupation which it has maintained since 1967, and that the future o f the territories in question should be determined in negotiations which must place the Palestinian people in a position, by an appropriate process defined within the framework of the comprehensive peace settlement, to exercise fully its right to self-determination.
