HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 c77W
Mrs. Ann Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total number of council homes available for rent in each of the years 1978 to 1982.

Mr. Stanley

Estimates of the number of local authority and new town dwellings in England as at the end of each year from 1971 to 1981 appear in table 101 of "Housing and Construction Statistics 1971–1981" which is available in the Library.

The estimates are based on 1971 census results and such information as is available about subsequent gains and losses. The figures as at December 1982 will be published later this year in the light of the 1981 census results, when figures for earlier years will also be reviewed. However, it is estimated that during 1982, 30,300 newly built dwellings were added to the stock of local authorities and new towns in England and 188,600 were sold.
