HL Deb 14 March 1983 vol 440 cc589-90WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give a list of the prisons which had a dog trained to detect drugs at the end of 1977 and 1982 respectively; whether they will state, in the case of each prison, how many times the dog was called out in each of those years, and how many times drugs were detected, and whether they will also say how many times, in the case of each prison, their dog was called to another prison which did not have a dog of their own.

Lord Elton

In 1977 no dogs trained in the detection of drugs were assigned to individual prisons.

The attached table lists the establishments which in 1982 had a dog trained in the detection of drugs. Not all of the establishments listed had a suitable dog on their strength on 31st December 1982; those which did are denoted by an asterisk. Records are not always kept of negative searches and the attached table for 1982 therefore records only positive searches and the occasions upon which establishments loaned their dogs to establishments with no dog section.
