HL Deb 14 March 1983 vol 440 c590WA
The Earl of Longford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many women are now serving sentences of life imprisonment (a) in closed and (b) in open prisons; and how many of each category are Category A prisoners.

Lord Elton

The latest information held centrally, which is approximate, is that on 31st January 1983 there were 50 females in closed prison department establishments and five females in open establishments in England and Wales who were serving sentences of life imprisonment or detained for life under Section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933. Two of the 50 females in closed establishments were Category A prisoners.
