HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 c469W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what commitment of aid, other than that for the Songea-Makambako road, has been made by Her Majesty's Government to Tanzania since May 1979.

Mr. Raison

No other new commitments of aid have been made, but individual projects have been approved under the 1977 project grant.

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to what projects in Tanzania other than the Songea-Makambako road Her Majesty's Government are making a financial contribution in 1982–83.

Mr. Raison

Our other projects comprise a health sector project based at Mbeya; the construction of strategic grain stores at Dodoma and Shinyanga; the Tabora rural development programme; West Kilimanjaro dairy farm; rural water supply and rural development projects in the Lindi and Mtwara regions; armyworm control; and clove research and mapping projects in Zanzibar.

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion United Kingdom aid to Tanzania in 1982–83 represents of total United Kingdom aid to African countries in the current year.

Mr. Raison

Our bilateral assistance to Tanzania is expected to be about 12 per cent. of our estimated total bilateral assistance to African countries in 1982–83.

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, pursuant to his answer of 4 March, Official Report, c. 252, concerning aid to Tanzania, he will break down the figure of £73 million in respect of the construction of the Songea-Makambako road to indicate how much has been and is estimated to be spent in each year from 1980 to 1986; whether any changes have been made in the plans for the road since construction begun; and if it is still expected to be passable in all weather.

Mr. Raison

Actual and estimated expenditures are as follows:

£ million
1980 14.8
1981 11.7
1982 10.7
1983 16.4
1984 10.0
1985 8.8
1986 1.0

There has been no major change in plans; some sections of the road have had to be realigned and some minor design modifications have been required since construction began. The completed road is expected to be passable in all weather.
