HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 cc480-1W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the qualifications and experience of Mr. Roy Griffiths which he took into account in appointing him to inquire into the efficiency of the National Health Service.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Roy Griffiths was appointed because a top business man was wanted to advise us on the way we go about the business of managing the NHS and ensuring that the patient and the public get value for money. Mr. Griffiths is a professional manager with substantial and successful experience in managing large-scale enterprises whose business has much in common with the NHS: direct service to the public; large-scale manpower requirements; high technology developments; a need for quality control; and ever-increasing demand. Mr. Griffiths joined Sainsburys in 1968 from Monsanto Europe, where he was a director. He became a director of Sainsburys in 1969, deputy chairman in 1975 and has been deputy chairman and managing director since 1979.
