§ Mr. Austin Mitchell
asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will bring up to date the figures given in his reply of 21 July 1982 to the hon. Member for Grimsby, Official Report, c. 164, concerning average earnings; and if he will include as a separate item the corresponding figures for the public sector.

The latest available information is as follows:

Percentage increase in average gross earnings of employees where pay was not affected by absence between April 1979 and April 1982

Weekly earnings Hourly earnings

Full-time manual men aged 21 and over in manufacturing 41.1 48.1

All other full-time men aged 21 and over, excluding those in the public sector 53.5 55.7

Full-time men aged 21 and over in the public sector 57.2 61.8
