HL Deb 09 March 1983 vol 440 cc317-8WA
Lord Hawke

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that it is in the public interest that the building societies should divert their attention from their normal business towards providing banking services.

Lord Cockfield

The Government are studying with care the Building Societies Association's report onThe Future Constitution and Powers of Building Societies. As that report recognises, any proposed change in building society legislation is a matter for public debate, and the Government will take account of the views of other interested parties before reaching conclusions with regard to possible future legislation.
