HL Deb 09 March 1983 vol 440 c318WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will confirm that a booklet giving up-to-date information for prisoners is in proof form, and will shortly be available to all prisoners, and that it will refer to five separate leaflets on detailed matters which are to be available on demand; whether they will state the subjects covered by those leaflets; and whether they will confirm that a decision has been taken to translate both the booklet and the leaflets into Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Greek, Spanish and Welsh.

Lord Elton

The subjects covered by the leaflets are bail, appeals to the Crown Court, appeals to the House of Lords, legal aid for proceedings in magistrates' courts, and legal aid for proceedings in the Crown Court. The leaflet on bail is specifically referred to in the booklet; the other leaflets are for distribution as appropriate to prisoners who ask, as the booklet advises, to see the legal aid officer if they want information about legal aid or how to appeal. I confirm that the position on the other matters to which the noble Lord refers is as described in his Question.
