HC Deb 09 March 1983 vol 38 cc420-1W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what studies are now taking place in his Department in the light of the British Medical Association report on the medical effects of nuclear war; and what discussions he is initiating with the medical profession on this matter.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Work in the department on civil defence planning for the National Health Service in conventional or nuclear war is a continuing process. We have read the recent report of the BMA and noted its contents. Its conclusions are largely based on an opinion of political and defence issues and, in particular, on the likely scale of any nuclear attack.
