HC Deb 09 March 1983 vol 38 c444W
Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much Glasgow has received by way of grants from the European Community in each of the years from 1979 to date; and how much of this has been offset by reductions in grant from the United Kingdom Government.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Grant commitments from the European regional development fund towards projects in Glasgow district in the period 1979 to 1982 are as follows:

£
1979 4,861,670
1980 1,817,125
1981 7,562,133
1982 4,637,985

Most social fund receipts are in support of training schemes operated by the Manpower Services Commission and it is not possible to break down the assistance to specific areas. Similar considerations apply to grants from the European coal and steel community for the resettlement or redeployment of redundant coal and steel workers. There was also one grant from the European agricultural guidance and guarantee fund of £259,243 in 1981.

Potential European Community grant receipts are taken into account in planning public expenditure programmes, and they enable these programmes to be maintained at a higher level than could otherwise be afforded.
