HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 c674W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list those occasions in the last year when members of the armed forces, including the Territorial Army, have been hired or lent to private companies or individuals to act as guards; and what was the fee.

Mr. Stanley

The only occasion in the last year on which members of the armed forces have been used in this way is the involvement of a small number of TA volunteers in guarding the greens at the Royal Birkdale golf club. This involvement of the TA was not properly authorised, and the soldiers were withdrawn as soon as it came to notice. No fee was levied.
