HC Deb 21 February 1983 vol 37 cc352-3W
Mr. David Young

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the cost of training a nurse; and in which authorities where they have trained, nurses have been refused employment with that authority after completion of their training during the last year.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

Training both state registered and state enrolled nurses involves employment by an NHS health authority and it is not possible precisely to separate training from employment costs. We can however estimate the current average cost of training a state registered nurse at £9,500 for the total three year course and of a state enrolled nurse at £6,300 for the two year course. These figures exclude that part of the cost of the trainee's remuneration and other costs estimated to represent the value of services rendered in providing nursing service.

The information on which authorities have refused employment to nurses on completion of their training during the last year is not available centrally.
