HC Deb 21 February 1983 vol 37 c367W
Mr. W. E. Garrett

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much derelict land in Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear has been reclaimed since 1973; and what amount of classified derelict land remains to be reclaimed.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The amount of derelict land in Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear reclaimed between 1 January 1973 and 31 March 1978 was

Northumberland — 344 hectares
Durham — 1,166 hectares
Tyne and Wear — 922 hectares

No information is available on the amount of land reclaimed since 1 April 1978, or on the amount of derelict land remaining to be reclaimed. Up to date information will be provided when the analysis of the derelict land survey held in 1982 is complete and ready for publication later this year.

The last national survey, made in 1974, showed that there were 2,411 hectares of derelict land in Northumberland, 3,106 hectares in Durham and 1,314 hectares in Tyne and Wear. Of this, 1,640 hectares, 2,645 hectares and 1,277 hectares respectively were considered to justify reclamation.
