HC Deb 21 February 1983 vol 37 cc295-6W
Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the total number of council house sales which have been concluded under the Tenants' Rights (Scotland) Act.

Mr. Allan Stewart

Statistical returns submitted to my Department by local authorities indicate that in the period between 1 October 1980 and 30 September 1982, 15,214 sales of local authority houses to sitting tenants were concluded, some of which were voluntary sales. It is not possible to identify separately sales concluded under the Tenants' Rights Etc. (Scotland) Act.

A further 1,910 sales have so far been reported for the quarter ended 31 December 1982, with 14 authorities still to submit their returns. In addition to these completed sales there were approximately 6,500 cases at 31 December 1982 in which missives had been concluded. There were 7,158 completed sales of new towns and SSHA houses in the period 1 October 1980 to 31 December 1982. These figures reflect the continuing and sustained interest by council tenants in purchasing their own homes.
